Don’t spend all your money on New Year sales – you’ll need some to buy the most anticipated games of early 2013.
2012 saw the release of video game giants like Assassin’s Creed 3, Halo 4 and Black Ops II, but that’s far from the end of your game buying spree. These highly anticipated titles of 2013 have most gamers anxiously waiting for their long awaited releases, and with good reason. Here are some of the hottest titles hitting our consoles this year.
1- Bioshock Infinite
The third instalment in the Bioshock franchise is looking to be truly amazing. It’s neither a prequel nor is it a sequel: instead, Bioshock Infinite is set in an earlier time period and it features a whole new environment, characters and plot. But even in the wide open city floating above the clouds called Columbia, the themes and game concepts that were present in the dark and claustrophobic city of Rapture remain. The surreal brightness of the city, the religious worship of the American Founding Fathers and the murderous mobs you encounter on your journey make for a compelling storyline and immersive environment.
The character you play as, Booker, has his own personality, ideas and values and lends a totally different experience to the emptiness that denoted the previous characters you play as. This game has been delayed twice, and is now due for a March 26th 2013 release. Hopefully this means it’ll be close to flawless.
2- Crysis 3
This franchise is famous for its unmatched graphics, and with this third main instalment in the Crysis series being built using the CryEngine 3 game engine, it will continue to boast this reputation. The sheer quality of the imaging this game offers is as close to lifelike as we’re likely to get for a long time. Of course, a game needs more than pretty pictures to be worth your money. Never fear, though, because the gameplay and storyline are more than worth it. Prophet, the game’s protagonist, returns on a vengeful quest against the evil Cell Corporation who desire world domination in the aftermath of the Ceph invasion. The swamp-like environments are sure to provide a new dimension to the already well-established gameplay. Get it in February 2013.
3- God of War: Ascension
This March 12threlease is sure to give you the adrenaline rush you’ve been craving since the last God of War game came out in 2010. The seventh instalment in this series and prequel to Kratos’ bloody journey, this game is certain to deliver on the much loved gore and exciting fights this series has become famous for. More than this, this will be the first game in this franchise to feature multiplayer, which will keep you playing this game long after you’ve finished the single-player campaign.
4- The Last of Us
Developer Naughty Dog, those behind the legendary Uncharted series, have unveiled their newest project, The Last of Us; a game set in a post-apocalyptic where you will fight the Infected and hostile survivors intent on destroying you for whatever supplies you might have. It is a character-driven tale, and its gameplay is already being described as ‘genre-defining’. With the new ‘dynamic stealth’ mechanic, a player will have a multitude of options to choose from when encountering danger. Enemies will react differently to each technique and strategy employed by the player and this ensures varied gameplay tailored to one’s own play-style. Look for this game on May 7 2013.
No introduction is necessary for this timeless franchise. Employing new technology and systems, this new instalment of SimCity will offer the most comprehensive simulation ever attempted by the developer Maxis. Manage your own city by building roads, providing electricity and water supplies, entertaining your Sims and combating Godzilla. This highly anticipated game will ensure you boredom-free holidays with its release in March 5, 2013.
