A couple of years ago, Kindle was known as a device for reading books. However, this has changed. The latest model – Kindle Fire HD (7” display), can be considered as a complete tablet running on Android OS. This means that except for reading books you can also watch movies, browse, game and any other normal things a tablet could do.
Kindle Fire HD – Design
Weighting around 570g, Kindle Fire is considered to be the heaviest tablet from its gamma. Of course its weight is more or less the same as the weight of an ordinary tablet. The case looks really great with its curved edges thanks to which the grip is really tight and comfortable. However, we don’t enjoy one thing and it is the matte finish which is definitely a magnet for fingerprints. The only buttons that you will find on the device are the volume rocker and the sleep/power button. In terms of charging there is a microUSB port. The other included features are – 1.3 front-facing camera that can be used during video conversations on Skype. It can also be a best tablet for Christmas gift.
The most anticipated feature in this device is its screen, of course. Put behind Gorilla Glass, Fire HD has a display size of 8.9”. The PPI is 254 while the resolution is set to 1920 x 1200. The display itself looks really sharp and you will see this the minute the device is switched on. As for the viewing angle – it definitely met our expectations because it is wide enough. Of course it is not as good as Apple’s Retina display but it is pretty close actually.
Kindle Fire HD – UI and Features
The interface is quite friendly and probably nobody will have a problem with it. You will be able to use a variety of media players, listen to music, play videos, read books, play games, browse photos, docs, webpages and last but not least – Kindle store. And since the display is really great, you will be able to enjoy 1080p videos from YouTube. However, Amazon has set a limitation for video streaming and it is set to 720p.
The device is equipped with 1.5Ghz Qualcomm Cortex A9 dual-core processor and 1GB RAM. These specifications keep Kindle running pretty smoothly and seamlessly. That’s why it is considered one of the best device for travelers today.
So basically you won’t have any major problems using the device as tablet. Playing games and watching movies is really great because of the integrated Dolby Digital system that takes the gaming experience to a whole new level. However, if you read book for a longer period of time you might find the device a bit heavy.
The integrated memory is 16GB. Bad news is that even though the device uses Android, you will not have access to Google Play. So if you think about downloading and using Android applications, then Kindle is not the device for you.
The contract offered by Amazon is actually pretty affordable. For 49£ per year, you will be able to stream movies and go through Kindle’s library containing more than 200 000 books that can be borrows for no extra cost. This is a great bargain if you are about to use the device daily.
Decent speakers, great screen, nice UI and the biggest library all over the world – those are the things that Kindle Fire HD can offer you. Along with the chance to watch movies and play some games, the device is definitely a good choice within its price range. It doesn’t have as much features as other tablets, but it is still a really nice gadget that will help you run from the boredom.
