Android is undisputedly the most used mobile operating system during the past couple of years, but the latest statistics show an interesting fact – 22% of Android users switch to an iPhone, while just 9% of iPhone users start using an Android device. The difference in these numbers may be caused by the fact that it is much easier to switch from Android to iPhone. I’ve prepared some tips on how to make this switch easier and quicker, so keep on reading if you are planning to change your Android device with an iPhone. Hope this guide will help you in migrating from android to iOS smoothly.
Preserving Your Contact List
The first job of most users when they switch their mobile devices is to copy and backup their contact list. Many mobile carriers will help you move your contacts from your old Android device to the new iPhone. Usually, this is done in the store when you are activating your new mobile device. It is best to check your carrier’s website and find out if they offer this service.
Don’t worry if you have already purchased and activated your iPhone. Most carriers will transfer your contacts even if you have purchased your device earlier. Keep in mind that you should bring your old device with you.
If your career doesn’t offer this service, then it will be up to you to transfer your contacts. One way to do this is to sync your contact list with Google or the Microsoft Exchange server. This way you’ll be able to quickly and easily transfer all your contacts to the iPhone.
Assuming that you’ve already uploaded your contact list to the Microsoft Exchange server or Gmail, then all you need to do is grab your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select Add Account. Select Microsoft Exchange from the new menu and fill in your email address and additional login information. (If you are using the Microsoft Exchange server, then you’ll also need to fill in the Domain field. Leave it blank if you are using Gmail.) The next step is to enter your username, or email address if you are using Gmail. The final step is to fill in the Server field. Type the address of the Microsoft Exchange server, or m.google.com if you are using Gmail.
Keep in mind that your iPhone may need up to several minutes to synchronize your contacts depending on how many they are.
Another method which you can use to move your contacts from an Android device to an iPhone is to use an SD Card. First you have to insert the card into the memory card slot on your Android device. Afterwards you have to navigate to the People App and tap Import/Export > Export to SD Card. This will create a .VCF file on your SD Card. The next step is to copy this file to your computer. Finally, open Gmail, open the drop-down menu situated in the upper-left corner and select Contacts > Import Contacts. Navigate to the .VCF file and open it. This will import all your contacts in Gmail and afterwards you can move them to your iPhone. See the common android rooting disasters and solutions!
Moving Multimedia Files
After moving your contacts, you’ll want to move all your pictures, videos and music. Thankfully, it is quite easy to do this, just make sure you follow the guidelines shown below.
The first step is to connect your Android device with the computer. Afterwards, you have to mount it as a removable disk drive. Browse it using Windows Explorer or Finder, depending on which OS you are using, and find the files that you want to move. Usually, photos and videos are located in a folder named DCIM while other multimedia is usually situated in suitably labeled folders.
If you are not sure where to look for a certain file, then you can use the helpful search function to look for certain files depending on their name or file extension. Find all the media you need and copy it to your computer.
You can move music to your iPhone by importing it into iTunes or another music management program and synchronizing all files with the iPhone.
Photos and videos can be imported by using iPhoto or iTunes, depending on the platform you are using. In order to import these files via iTunes, you have to open the program and add your files to the Photos tab by checking the Sync Photos From checkbox and selecting the directory of your files. All multimedia files added to iTunes will be uploaded to your iPhone the next time it syncs.
Guide to Simple Syncing
Syncing your files using iTunes is only difficult the first time you do it. The main reason for this is that you have to setup several options before preparing your iPhone and iTunes application for synchronization. iTunes allows you to easily control all the contacts, apps, music, movies, shows, podcasts, ringtones and other files that you want or do not want on your iPhone.
The quickest way to optimize the syncing process is to uncheck the files that you don’t want to be synched. This way you won’t waste your time waiting for iTunes to sync files that you don’t need and you won’t clutter your iPhone with unnecessary content. You should definitely check the Sync With This iPhone Over Wi-Fi option, because it makes syncing much easier and more convenient.
If your iPhone doesn’t have enough disk space, then you should also check the Sync Only Checked Songs and Videos checkbox. This way you’ll only move certain files to your iPhone and you won’t waste too much space.
Reformatting or Remaking Ringtones
Preparing ringtones for an Android device isn’t a difficult task, but if you will find out that it is quite more difficult to create a ringtone for your iPhone. On Android you can use a wide range of applications that can be used to cut and edit music files in order to create different ringtones. However, there aren’t so many similar applications in the Apple Store and it is best to use iTunes.
Creating a ringtone through iTunes may seem a long job in the beginning, but after you do it a few times, you’ll see that the method is actually quite quick, simple and convenient. The first step is to open iTunes and load the music file that you want to use as a ringtone. Afterwards, you have to right-click on the file and select Get Info > Options > Properties. There you’ll see several fields, including Start Time and Stop Time. These two fields are used to tell the program the starting and ending point of your ringtone. Adjust the numbers according to your needs and close the Properties window. Once again, right-click on the audio file, but this time click Create AAC Version. Drag the file to the desktop or a random directory and rename it using the .m4r extension.
Double-click the .m4r file to import it into the Tones library. If you are using a Windows machine, then you’ll probably be prompted to choose a program which opens .m4r files. Select iTunes and click ok. When you do this iTunes will automatically upload the new ringtone to your iPhone.
Don’t Forget Google Apps and Services
Android is developed by Google, so it is no surprise that Android users can take advantage of absolutely any Google service. Some of the most popular services like Google Drive and Google Music are used daily by millions of people and if you own an Android device, then you are probably using at least 2-3 of Google’s services.
Thankfully, you can keep using all of Google’s services even after you switch to an iPhone. In fact, many of Google’s services are more functional and run better on the iPhone, so you might even gain access to some extra features.
Some of the best Google services for iOS are Google Drive, Google Maps and Gmail. All of these applications are as good as their counterparts for Android and you can be sure that you won’t miss any of the features you used to have.
Application and Account Compatibility
If you are interested in smartphones and mobile operating systems, then you surely know that same versions of applications can’t run on different platforms unless they are optimized for a certain OS. This is a big problem, because all of the applications which you bought for your Android won’t be usable on your iPhone and you’ll have to buy them again from Apple’s Store.
The easiest way to find the applications you used on your Android device is to check their names and search for their iOS versions. If you are not sure about the name of an application that you used in the past, then you need to open Google Play’s website and log in with your account. Afterwards, click My Android Apps located on the top of the page. This will take you to a page where you will see the names of all applications you’ve ever purchased or downloaded.
Although applications cannot be used on different platforms, you can still use the data collected by them. For example, you can take the data stored on your Android device and transfer it to your iPhone. This is very useful if you use social networks, fitness applications, to-do lists, sticky note apps, etc.
As you can see, switching from Android to iPhone isn’t as difficult as you think. The simple guidelines above will certainly make the transition much easier and your iPhone will be as functional as your old Android device.
